Why Adults Choose MK Dental Care

I have two young children Marcus and Alison. One a teenager and the other fast approaching.

I understand the problem of teaching children good dental habits and good diet. I know it is hard and most of us fail to achieve our goals.

The secret is to have good goals and constantly fight against the obstacles in our way.

Some people might think this is an unusual way to outline our practice's Children's Dental Care.

But we are realistic and know that it is a real struggle and that as they get older they get more and more difficult to influence.

This is why the secret is good habits from a very young age.

We want our patients to be committed to Life Long Dental Health

What we offer children on the NHS

We should start by saying that we are the only Milton Keynes Dental Practice with an NHS contract to treat children only. This is because we were the only practice which met the very exacting requirements laid down by Milton Keynes NHS Primary Care Trust.

KaliaWe should also say that we do not accept all children as patients, we only accept patients who are committed to Life Long Dental Health.

We have about 1000 children and periodically as children reach 16 or move out of the City (although many actually still continue as patients).

Children are offered their 1st visits for free and we do a pre acceptance screening. We have an Anti Discrimination Policy and acceptance does not depend on whether we see the child's parents, each child is treated on their own merits. We sometimes refuse to take on children as NHS patients and this will be for reasons such as the complexity of their problem and need for specialist care, the patients refusal to co operate or where we feel we do not have the skill required to achieve long term dental fitness. In all these cases we will refer the patient to an appropriate clinic.

We use exactly the same materials for our children as we do for our private adult patients, so for example most fillings for children are tooth coloured. We follow the same high standards of Cross Infection Control. We are happy to answer all questions and a written treatment plan/report is given at each check up visit.

All children treated on the NHS receive an examination as well as x-rays where appropriate

We then give each child
A written itemized treatment plan
Which gives information about
image Current dental health
Any dental problems (current or anticipated)
Any Specialist referrals
Any necessary further treatment required and options/alternatives
Proposed Orthodontic treatment or referrals
Suggested date for next check up
Any Dental Health Advice required including Diet Advice as well as Topical Fluoride Treatment or Fissure Sealants if these are necessary.

Dental Examinations at MK Dental Care for children and Teenagers always includes Dental Health Education and usually includes Fluoride treatment as well as advice about Diet and Tooth Cleaning.
We have a dedicated room for Dental Health Education.

It has a large double sink and mirrors

There are lots of leaflets to read and take away.

There is a TV with Video and DVD's.

We also sell a full range of toothbrushes and other dental health items.

What do we offer privately?

Patients may see the Hygienist, for example, for sealants, fluoride therapy or preventative cleaning etc where this treatment may not be appropriate on the NHS.

Patients who want to be seen at a particular time (Saturday or after school) may be seen privately at these times.

Children who are not prepared to wait for an appointment may pay privately if they wish to be seen sooner.

Children who wish to have check ups more frequently than the NHS NICE intervals may pay privately if they wish to be seen sooner.

Children may be seen as NHS patients outside our core NHS times if we see their parents at the same time.

The quality of our NHS examination, referrals, explanations etc means that children can have all their necessary dental care on the NHS

Do we need to be seen privately?

The main advantages are that you can be seen at a time that may suit you better, you may also be seen sooner, but even more importantly you can have all the preventative and specialist treatment which may not be appropriate under the NHS.

An extra hygienist visit costs £20.00 for a normal week day appointment

Good oral hygiene and a good diet are the secret. Good Dentistry is the option when we get the first lot wrong. We also feel that children should see the same faces when they visit the dentist. Change is not a good thing. Our Dentist and Hygienist have been worked at our practice for nearly 10 years.

Our experience is that generally well looked after children have well looked after mouths, and those with problems are as a result of bad habits and poor diet.

Although not always true we have a good idea what children's mouths will be like before they even open their mouths. Tooth decay in our experience is always found in dirty mouths, and the converse is true clean mouths seldom have decay.

However we are seeing a lot of teeth being damaged by soft fizzy drinks such as Diet Coke. This is in mouths with seemingly good oral hygiene. We say this because many of us were told that sugar is the key but as lots of parent know it is not the only one.

For more information about dental Diseases have a look at our information pages on:

Dental Decay, Baby Bottle Decay, Toothpaste, Tooth Brushing, Fluoride, Gum Disease, My First Tooth,Plaque.

As a practice we believe that we offer good quality care for children. Our Dentist and Hygienist both have children and can understand both the clinical and parental issues. In addition our surgeries have a modern ethos and layout and we are constantly taking on new innovations and techniques.

We do not have fancy marketing ploys but offer high quality care instead. In addition to the care we provide we refer most children for specialist consultations re Orthodontic Care. The number of new patients we see where they need Perhaps more than anything patients who come to our practice see the same dentist each time.

We have a dedicated Dental Heath Education room where we discuss their dental care.

We also use it for explaining dental treatment plan etc. There is a video and sinks which are essential.

All oral Hygiene Instruction is free and we have a constant stream of patients coming in for reinforcement lessons.

So why do we not offer NHS care to Adult Patients?

We want our patients to feel welcomed by  Our receptionist who sits behind the lovely solid beech reception desk.

The waiting room is decorated in warm colours. There is comfortable  seating, with couple of high back chairs too. There is a TV which we find most patients prefer.

David's surgery is large and bright, with the latest equipment. This surgery is always admired by dentists when they visit the surgery, as everything is close at hand, yet hidden away.

Our surgeries are child friendly, as are our staff. David's surgery has large widescreen TV on the ceiling and there are lots of toys in the waiting room.

We train all our staff to the highest standards and the wall are covered with their certificates and qualifications..
We have an Oral Health room where we can explain Treatment plans in private and give Dental Heath education.

We have a display of the products we sell as well as a range of literature which we give to patients.

The Double sinks are really useful when we are showing children how to brush properly.
