Why Adults Choose MK Dental Care

David Gilmartin is my name. I was born in Coventry in 1956. I went to school locally and in 1979 I qualified as a dentist at Trinity College Dublin.

I am married to Nur and we have two Children: Marcus born 1992 and Alison born 1995.

Alison enjoys dancing and reading and playing with our dog Romeo, she was at school at the Grove Independent School and then at Swanbourne House but is now at Oundle School with Marcus.

Marcus,  was at School at the Grove Independent School and is now away at Oundle School, he enjoys playing football and was signed up with Wycombe Wanderers for two seasons. His favourite game is now Golf: he plays off 10.

I worked in three practices before buying the Surgery in Conniburrow.

I bought the practice in 1987. I actually started working from home providing an Emergency Dental Service before I bought the practice in Conniburrow.

In 1987 practically nobody was providing emergency care outside surgery hours. I was really busy. Every since then we have built up a reputation for seeing patients in pain quickly and giving them a high priority.

When I bought the practice I started with my first Hygienist. I have always believed that good dental care requires a hygienist.  I think this is borne out by the fact that practices that have one are almost always the practices with the best reputations locally.

In 1992 I got married to Nur and that saw a change in the way the practice was run. We started a program ofregular refurbishment and improvements which continue.

In 2000 we changed the name of the practice to MK Dental Care, because it reflects that we offer dental care to patients right across the city and beyond.

I have never wanted to own a large practice. I think it's because when you work in a large practice you lose the contact with patients on a one to one basis.

Children are a joy to treat. I now see patients who are starting their own own families whose mothers I treated when she was pregnant with them.

Our patients are of two main types. Our regulars who come to see our Hygienist every three months. These are the patients that any dentist would be proud to show off. In fact when we had a locum Hygienist who complimented me on how great the patients were and how easy they were to treat. Its a matter of emphasis. We want our patients to keep their mouths healthy and fresh.

The second group of patients are the new patients who come to us. There are two types: those who come because they have been recommended by a friend or family.  Many come to us because they want to have fresher Mouths or Nicer Smiles. The other new patients are those in pain, and they come to us because of reputation for never turning a patient in pain away or keeping them waiting too long.

I enjoy doing postgraduate training not only because you learn new things but because it gives you a chance to meet and chat to other dentists. I do this on a regular and frequent basis.

A look around my practice will show you that I am proud of what I have built up.

In 1999 we decided to stop providing NHS Dental Care to patients who were not exempt from patient charge. We continued to provide NHS care for children and exempt adults. In 2004 we stopped treating all adults on the NHS and now only treat children on the NHS.

There were many reasons why but it was the general relationship that exists between the NHS and appalling levels of care.

We are the only dental practice in Milton Keynes to qualify for a "Child Only NHS Dental Contract". Many dentists who applied to the NHS were refused as the did not meet the very exacting requirements.

All new patients have an Initial Consultation and if required Radiographs.

We are lucky because we have built up a reputation for good quality and Outstanding Value for Money so we hope we have nothing to worry about . I spoke to a dentist recently who has a practice in a  similar area to me. He said he could not understand how we could have built our practice up the way we did. I think it's about a vision based on Quality and Value for money. When I refer to quality I don't just mean doing fillings that last along time, but about maintaining a clean and safe environment and conforming not just to the basic standard of Cross infection control but the highest standard of Cross Infection Control.

Two of our team have just won major prizes. One of our nurses was awarded the highest prize for achievement in her Dental Nurse Training by Buckinghamshire Health Authority. This competition was open to all Dental Nurses. This was the first time in 8 years that this prestige prize has been awarded. In addition David was awarded the top prize by The British Dental Association (Milton Keynes) at the end of a recent Post Graduate Education program. Continuous Professional Development is compulsory for all dentists and the prize was hotly contested over 30 local dentists who took part.

We are now a Recognised Dental Practice for Dental Nurse Training, and at the moment have 3 nurses who are with us for part-time work experience every week. Our practice offers the chance to use the latest equipment and work with the most modern materials, and in addition we also have a very close working relationship with the local Dental Specialists. In the last 5 years or so we have had 3 trainee Dental Nurses qualify after doing their work experience with us.

In my spare time I play golf, Until 2002 I was involved in football coaching and managed a local football team. In 2001 I got my FA Coaching Certificate.

We want our patients to feel welcomed by  Our receptionist who sits behind the lovely solid beech reception desk.

The waiting room is decorated in warm colours. There is comfortable  seating, with couple of high back chairs too. There is a TV which we find most patients prefer.

David's surgery is large and bright, with the latest equipment. This surgery is always admired by dentists when they visit the surgery, as everything is close at hand, yet hidden away.

Our surgeries are child friendly, as are our staff. David's surgery has large widescreen TV on the ceiling and there are lots of toys in the waiting room.

We train all our staff to the highest standards and the wall are covered with their certificates and qualifications..
We have an Oral Health room where we can explain Treatment plans in private and give Dental Heath education.

We have a display of the products we sell as well as a range of literature which we give to patients.

The Double sinks are really useful when we are showing children how to brush properly.

Why Adults Choose MK Dental Care

A Nicer Healthier Smile

We believe that a Nicer smile is more than simply Straight White Teeth.

We believe that you have to get the basics right first. So often we see new patients who have paid a lot of money for crowns, which have bleeding around the gum margins, maybe be wobbly, and also have a nasty taste in their mouth and suffer from bad breath.

Our aim is to provide a healthy Nicer smile. This is why we always start by getting the gums into proper order. This may be simple but in many cases it requires Gum Treatment with the Hygienists including Fresh Breath Therapy.

We are never too proud to let patients know if we feel the solution to their problem requires a referral to a Specialist.

We provide a range of treatments including

Dental Veneers

Tooth Coloured Fillings

Dental Crowns

Dental Bridges

 Removable Dentures

Destaining Treatments

Tooth Bleaching

Dental Bleaching is available but is not suitable for everyone. We offer a free consultation which quickly identify patients for whom bleaching is not appropriate and who would benefit from other Dental options.

Dental Veneers have improved many smiles and been made more popular as a result of "Make-Over Programs"

We have lots of before and after photographs to illustrate what is available and what are the likely results.

We are not in the business of the hard sell and if we are unable to help a patient ourselves we do not regard this as a failure or deficiency on our part because we are happy to refer to specialists and colleagues who we know have the expertise and knowledge to provide the best treatment. results

We offer free consultations for Tooth Whitening Treatments: Please call us to arrange an appointment on 01908 690326.

Here are some examples of what can be done to improve smiles. We show these not to show off our work but as part of our policy to educate visitors to our website what modern dentists can do.  These pictures are from patients and dentists all around the world and the sort of results that a dentist near to you may be able to do for you too!

PORCELAIN VENEERS

A porcelain veneer (dental veneer, dental porcelain laminate, tooth veneer) is a thin layer of porcelain made to fit over the front surface of a tooth.

Veneers can be used to lighten discoloured teeth, straighten squint teeth and to close spaces between front teeth.

Porcelain veneers are routinely used to improve the cosmetic appearance of teeth that are discoloured, worn, chipped, or misaligned. The ceramic material is bonded to the front of teeth to change the tooth's colour, size, and/or shape.

What is the difference between porcelain veneers & dental crowns?

Dental crowns typically encase an entire tooth whereas porcelain veneers typically only cover the front of a tooth.

Main advantages of porcelain veneers:

1. Porcelain veneers look just like real teeth

Porcelain veneers are translucent, so when they are bonded onto a tooth's surface, they mimic the light-handling characteristics of enamel.

2. Porcelain veneers resist staining

Porcelain veneers are not susceptible to staining and discolouring like other forms of dental bonding. This means that the surface of a porcelain veneer will not pick up permanent stains.

Disadvantages of porcelain veneers:

- may break off
- irreversible process

Who are porcelain veneers not suitable for?

Porcelain veneers may not be suitable if you:
- have unhealthy teeth
- have weak teeth
- do not have enough tooth enamel
- grind your teeth

TEETH WHITENING

What we do at MK Dental Care

At MK Dental Care we provide most of our Tooth whitening using a Tray System which the patient wears at home. The treatment takes 2/4 weeks to complete. We combine this with a "Rapid Boost" system in the surgery.

We have tried several systems and we have found that the Tray System used at home offers the best long term result and is certainly better value than the Rapid systems using Special Lights/Lasers.

What else is available

Many teeth whitening systems are available, including whitening toothpastes, over-the counter gels, strips and trays, and whitening agents obtained from a dentist.

Teeth whitening is ideal for people who have healthy, unrestored teeth (no fillings) and gums. Individuals with yellow tones to their teeth respond best. But this cosmetic procedure is not recommended for everyone.

Whitening Toothpastes

All toothpastes help remove surface stains because they have mild abrasives. Some whitening toothpastes contain gentle polishing or chemical agents that provide additional stain removal effectiveness. Whitening toothpastes can help remove surface stains only and do not contain bleach; over-the-counter and professional whitening products contain hydrogen peroxide (a bleaching substance) that helps remove stains on the tooth surface as well as stains deep in the tooth.

Whitening toothpastes can lighten your tooth's colour by about one shade. In contrast, light-activated whitening conducted in your dentist's office (see below) can make your teeth three to eight shades lighter.

Tray-Based Tooth Whitening Products

Tray based tooth whitening systems, purchased either over-the-counter or from your dentist, involve filling a mouth guard-like tray with a gel whitening solution which contains a peroxide-bleaching agent and wearing the tray for a period of time, generally from a couple hours a day to every day during the night for up to 4 weeks and even longer (depending on the degree of staining and desired level of whitening).

How Long Do the Whitening Effects Last?

Whitening is not permanent. People who expose their teeth to foods and beverages that cause staining may see the whiteness start to fade in as little as 1 month. Those who avoid foods and beverages that stain may be able to wait one year or longer before another whitening treatment or touch-up is needed.

The degree of whiteness will vary from individual to individual depending on the condition of the teeth, nature of the stain, the type of bleaching system used and for how long.

Risks Associated With Teeth Whitening

The two side effects that occur most often are a temporary increase in tooth sensitivity and mild irritation of the soft tissues of the mouth, particularly the gums. Tooth sensitivity often occurs during early stages of the bleaching treatment. Tissue irritation most commonly results from an ill-fitting mouthpiece tray rather than the tooth-bleaching agent. Both of these conditions usually are temporary and disappear within 1 to 3 days of stopping or completing treatment.

If you do experience sensitivity, you can reduce or eliminate it by:

  • Wearing the tray for a shorter period of time (for example, two 30-minute sessions vs. two 60-minute sessions)
  • Stop whitening your teeth for two to three days to allow your teeth to adjust to the whitening process
  • Ask your dentist or pharmacist for a high fluoride-containing product, which can help remineralize your teeth. Apply the fluoride product to the tray and wear for 4 minutes prior to and following the whitening agent.
  • Brush your teeth with a toothpaste made for sensitive teeth. These toothpastes contain potassium nitrate, which helps soothe your teeth's nerve endings.

What we offer

Cosmetic Dental Treatment is now very popular. Many patients will have seen programs on the TV and have realised that they can have treatment which will improve their smile and increase their self confidence.

Unlike many practice which offer £20,000+ make-over's we offer affordable solutions.

For example veneers start from £250 each, with the vast majority costing £300. The cost depends on the complexity of the case.

When you come to the practice we will show you pictures of ordinary patients whom we have treated as you can see the before and after pictures.

We see some patients who need very specialist treatments and we are very happy to refer them to the specialists of their choice.
