These teeth have been eroded by the chemicals in soft drinks Dentists say brushing your teeth an hour after having a fizzy drink could help stop the damage

Fizzy drinks are the main cause of increasing tooth erosion among teenagers, research suggests.

A study in the British Dental Journal found a strong link between fizzy drink consumption and tooth erosion.

The risk of tooth erosion was 59% higher in 12-year-olds, and 220% higher in 14-year-olds who drank fizzy drinks.

Drinking at least four glasses a day was associated with an increased risk of 252% in 12-year-olds and a massive 513% increased risk in 14-year-olds.

The survey of more than 1,000 children found that two-thirds of 12-year-olds reported drinking fizzy drinks. Among 14-year-olds this figure had risen to over 92%.

For both age groups more than 40% of those surveyed reported having three or more glasses of fizzy drinks per day.

Researcher Dr Peter Rock, of Birmingham University, said the study suggested fizzy drinks were "by far the biggest factor in causing dental erosion among teenagers".

He said drinking fizzy drinks

only once a day may significantly increase a child's chances of suffering dental erosion, while frequent consumption increased those risks further.

"Parents need to understand that while high levels of sugar cause decay, it is the acidity of certain products that causes erosion."

Professor Liz Kay

Erosion can make teeth more sensitive

Parental confusion

Professor Liz Kay, scientific advisor to the British Dental Association, welcomed the research.

She said: "Erosion is a growing problem among Britain's teenagers, yet many parents don't understand the difference between decay and erosion.

"Parents need to understand that while high levels of sugar cause decay, it is the acidity of certain products that causes erosion.

"While drinking 'diet' versions of fizzy drinks reduces sugar consumption, these products are very acidic and can still cause erosion."

Erosion, caused by acidic substances, is a wearing away of the enamel coating of teeth.

In the most serious cases the enamel is worn away to such an extent that the dentine (the substance that comprises the bulk of the tooth) or even the pulp (the root) of the tooth are exposed.

Decay, caused when the sugar in food and drink reacts with bacteria in plaque, attacks the areas between or on top of teeth.

The British Dental Health Foundation suggests the following tips to help
reduce the risk of dental erosion

· Limit acidic products and fizzy drinks to mealtimes to reduce the number of acid attacks on teeth.

· Drinks should be drunk quickly without holding or swishing' around the mouth.

Click to enlarge· Use a straw to help drinks go to the back of the mouth and avoid long contact with the teeth.

· Finish a meal with cheese or milk as this will help neutralise acid.

· Chew sugar-free gum to produce more saliva to help cancel out acid in your mouth.

· Wait for at least one hour after eating or drinking anything acidic before brushing your teeth. This gives your teeth time to build up their mineral content again.

· Brush teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste a small head brush with medium to soft bristles.

This means your teeth can become weak The high acid levels in some drinks means the enamel on your teeth wears away

Our Milton Keynes Dentist and Dental Practice Achievements and Awards

We value continuous professional development and recently one of our nurses passed the NVQ level 3 in Dental Nursing and received a merit award (one of only 42). Also recently two of our nurses, who are already qualified Dental Nurses, were awarded the Dental Radiography certificate from Bristol University, one of them qualified as a dental Radiographer after getting the best mark in their written exam for the Dental Radiography Certificate.

In addition  we were very proud when two of our team have won major dental education prizes. One of our nurses was awarded the highest prize for achievement in their Dental Nurse Training by Buckinghamshire Health Authority. This competition was open to all Dental Nurses. This was the first time in 8 years that this prestige prize has been awarded. In addition David was awarded the top prize by The British Dental Association (Milton Keynes) at the end of a recent Post Graduate Education program. Continuous Professional Development is compulsory for all dentists and the prize was hotly contested over 30 local dentists who took part.

We are now a Recognised Dental Practice for Dental Nurse Training, and at the moment have 3 nurses who are with us for part-time work experience every week. Our practice offers the chance to use the latest equipment and work with the most modern materials, and in addition we also have a very close working relationship with the local Dental Specialists. In the last 5 years or so we have had 3 trainee Dental Nurses qualify after doing their work experience with us.

We are delighted to welcome a new member of our team. Tina is going to be working with us as an Hygienist. She will be working on Saturday to begin with and will be in addition to Nur, our existing Hygienist.

Tina is an experienced hygienist. She commented after her first day how well trained and friendly our team was. She said she was particularly impressed with our emphasis on prevention and the high quality of knowledge of our Nursing staff.

Tina also remarked that our prices for tooth brushes etc were in her experience unbeatable. She also said complimented us on our exceptionally high standard of cross infection control. She said normally when an hygienist starts in a new job she has to make a few changes, however she found we already had all the materials she needed to do 1st class hygiene work.

We now have 3 qualified Dental Nurses. We believe that this reflects the high importance we attach to training and professional development.

Special Promotional offers

At the moment we have special promotional offers for Bleaching

The cost of Tooth Whitening also known as Tooth Bleaching starts at £175 with most patients paying £225 for a full mouth home bleaching tray system. We also do the 'Advanced In Surgery Rapid Bleaching System' which normally starts from £275 but is now included free. We offer a full range of Cosmetic Dentistry Choices including Dental Veneers.

At MKDentalCare we want our patients to feel welcomed by our
receptionist
who sits behind the lovely solid beech reception desk.

The waiting room is decorated in warm colours. There is comfortable  seating, with couple of high back chairs too. There is a TV which we find most patients prefer.

David's surgery is large and bright, with the latest equipment. This surgery is always admired by dentists when they visit the surgery, as everything is close at hand, yet hidden away.

Cross infection control was at the heart of our surgery planning.
