Before and after professional cleaning

There are many types of gum disease. The most common diseases of the periodontal tissues are the inflammatory processes of the gingiva and the attachment apparatus of the tooth. By far the most common periodontal pathologic conditions are gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is an inflammatory process of the gingiva in which the junction between the tooth and gum is altered but remains attached to the tooth. Periodontitis occurs when the ligament and bony attachment of the tooth have been lost.

You may have gum disease and not show any symptoms. Many people do not experience any pain due to gum disease. That is why we stress regular checkups which should include a periodontal examination.
