We are accepting new NHS patients (children will be seen even if we do not see their parents as patients)

We want this website to be helpful for existing patients, potential new patients or those who come to the site to view information. We have information about Where We Are, The Care That We Offer, Our Fees, Our Opening Hours, and information about Dental Diseases such as Oral Cancer and Lots Lots More.
We should also say that we do not accept all children as patients, we only accept patients who are committed to Life Long Dental Health. We have about 1000 children and periodically as children reach 16 or move out of the City (although many actually still continue as patients).
Children are offered their 1st visits for free and we do a pre acceptance screening. We have an Anti Discrimination Policy and acceptance does not depend on whether we see the child's parents, each child is treated on their own merits. We sometimes refuse to take on children as NHS patients and this will be for reasons such as the complexity of their problem and need for specialist care, the patients refusal to co operate or where we feel we do not have the skill required to achieve long term dental fitness. In all these cases we will refer the patient to an appropriate clinic.
We use exactly the same materials for our children as we do for our private adult patients, so for example most fillings for children are tooth coloured. We follow the same high standards ofCross Infection Control. We are happy to answer all questions and a written treatment plan/report is given at each check up visit.

What do we offer privately?
Patients may see the Hygienist, for example, for sealants, fluoride therapy or preventative cleaning etc where this treatment may not be appropriate on the NHS.
Patients who want to be seen at a particular time (Saturday or after school) may be seen privately at these times.
Children who are not prepared to wait for an appointment may pay privately if they wish to be seen sooner.
Children who wish to have check ups more frequently than the NHS NICE intervals may pay privately if they wish to be seen sooner.
Children may be seen as NHS patients outside our core NHS times if we see their parents at the same time.
The quality of our NHS examination, referrals, explanations etc means that children can have all their necessary dental care on the NHS
Do we need to be seen privately for Children?
The main advantages are that you can be seen at a time that may suit you better, you may also be seen sooner, but even more importantly you can have all the preventative and specialist treatment which may not be appropriate under the NHS.
An extra hygienist visit costs £25.00 for a simple Scale and Polish.
Good oral hygiene and a good diet are the secret. Good Dentistry is the option when we get the first lot wrong. We also feel that children should see the same faces when they visit the dentist. Change is not a good thing. Our Dentist and Hygienist have been worked at our practice for nearly 10 years.
Our experience is that generally well looked after children have well looked after mouths, and those with problems are as a result of bad habits and poor diet.
Although not always true we have a good idea what children's mouths will be like before they even open their mouths. Tooth decay in our experience is always found in dirty mouths, and the converse is true clean mouths seldom have decay.
However we are seeing a lot of teeth being damaged by soft fizzy drinks such as Diet Coke. This is in mouths with seemingly good oral hygiene. We say this because many of us were told that sugar is the key but as lots of parent know it is not the only one.
For more information about dental Diseases have a look at our information pages on:
As a practice we believe that we offer good quality care for children. Our Dentist and Hygienist both have children and can understand both the clinical and parental issues. In addition our surgeries have a modern ethos and layout and we are constantly taking on new innovations and techniques.
We do not have fancy marketing ploys but offer high quality care instead. In addition to the care we provide we refer most children for specialist consultations re Orthodontic Care. The number of new patients we see where they needOrthodontic Treatment urgently but have never been seen is amazing and often go hand in hand with the frequent changes of dentists at their previous dental practice.
Perhaps more than anything patients who come to our practice see the same dentist each time.
We have a dedicated Dental Heath Education room where we discuss their dental care.
We also use it for explaining dental treatment plan etc. There is a video and sinks which are essential.
All oral Hygiene Instruction is free and we have a constant stream of patients coming in for reinforcement lessons.
|Tooth Erosion is a major problem for Children and Adults|
|This Tooth Damage is caused by Fizzy Drinks|

latest newsWhen the new dental contract came out in 2006 we accepted an NHS contract to treat children only; this meant that we would only be able to treat children under 16 years old on the NHS. We will accept all children irrespective of whether we see anybody else in their family. All we ask if that the children and their parents are motivated, capable and committed to life-long high standards of dental health. We will continue offer all our patients the choice of being treated on a private basis. Patients usually pay for their treatment as they go along. However we now have a scheme for patients who wish to pay monthly. The cost is £8 a month.

We value continuous professional development and recently one of our nurses passed the NVQ level 3 in Dental Nursing and received a merit award (one of only 42). Also recently two of our nurses, who are already qualified Dental Nurses, were awarded the Dental Radiography certificate from Bristol University, one of them qualified as a dental Radiographer after getting the best mark in their written exam for the Dental Radiography Certificate.
In addition we were very proud when two of our team have won major dental education prizes. One of our nurses was awarded the highest prize for achievement in their Dental Nurse Training by Buckinghamshire Health Authority. This competition was open to all Dental Nurses. This was the first time in 8 years that this prestige prize has been awarded. In addition David was awarded the top prize by The British Dental Association (Milton Keynes) at the end of a recent Post Graduate Education program. Continuous Professional Development is compulsory for all dentists and the prize was hotly contested over 30 local dentists who took part.
We are now a Recognised Dental Practice for Dental Nurse Training, and at the moment have 3 nurses who are with us for part-time work experience every week. Our practice offers the chance to use the latest equipment and work with the most modern materials, and in addition we also have a very close working relationship with the local Dental Specialists. In the last 5 years or so we have had 3 trainee Dental Nurses qualify after doing their work experience with us.
We are delighted to welcome a new member of our team. Tina is going to be working with us as an Hygienist. She will be working on Saturday to begin with and will be in addition to Nur, our existing Hygienist.
Tina is an experienced hygienist. She commented after her first day how well trained and friendly our team was. She said she was particularly impressed with our emphasis on prevention and the high quality of knowledge of our Nursing staff.
Tina also remarked that our prices for tooth brushes etc were in her experience unbeatable. She also said complimented us on our exceptionally high standard of cross infection control. She said normally when an hygienist starts in a new job she has to make a few changes, however she found we already had all the materials she needed to do 1st class hygiene work.
We now have 3 qualified Dental Nurses. We believe that this reflects the high importance we attach to training and professional development.
